I find myself thinking of a book I read nearly 15 years ago. Bridget Jones Diary came along for me at a perfect time. It was 1999 and I was recently divorced and ironically, leaving Arizona to work abroad in London as an expat for 2 years. The movie came out and I remember thinking I had found my soul sister in Bridget Jones…. ok, so I didn’t smoke or have quite that foul of a mouth, but the weight struggle, oh, the weight struggle… my, oh my, Bridget and I were connected at the proverbial morning step on the scale.
Jump ahead 16 years and similar to the chapters in the book where Bridget starts out with her pounds gained and lost in the year at the beginning of each chapter and that is the reason for my post this month. I’ve been on yet another pound reduction activity, otherwise known as a diet for the last 10 weeks and am proud to say I am down 23lbs! Yeah Me! Even cooler, my husband and I are doing it together… of course, he is down more, but that is a tale for another day. Like Bridget, I’ve tried every diet that exists, but this time, I’m really trying the good old fashioned eat well and less than I usually do. I’ve got an awesome app on my phone that helps me and tells me, ENOUGH olé’ girl! I enjoy an occasional joyous glass of wine, but count it in the app. Slow and steady and hopefully in a few more months I can say I’ll have reached my happy place on that scale or at least in the jean size I prefer. I’m also trying to think ahead with the idea that I will be happier 3 months from now if I continue on this journey than if I have regrets because I didn’t. Enjoy a bit of holiday eats, but keep on keepin’ on the losin’ track!
So, I understand the next Bridget Jones movie is coming out in 2016 and a baby might be in the cards for my soul sister, Bridget. This would mean both our lives have evolved quite a bit since 1999. I’m sure her thigh size is still a major concern, but hopefully with a baby she realizes the weight is less about vanity and more about being a role model of overall health for her little one.
One other thing that changed for me, similar to Bridget, is my choice in men as I have a husband much like Mr. Darcy who quoted the awesome line “I like you very much, just as you are.”. Regardless of the jean size, this makes both me and Bridget like the sound of that.
Can’t wait for the next movie!!!
