The Mighty Tequila

Posted in justachik1

Some things command more respect than others. There’s summiting K2 and then there’s summiting Mount Everest.  Both are major accomplishments.  Both are impressive.  But there’s no denying Mount Everest garners more respect. The same is true for alcohol.  There’s shooting six shots of whiskey and then there’s shooting six shots of tequila.  Both are impressive feats.  However, there is something different about tequila.  There just is. I don’t believe in magic potions, but tequila makes me wonder.  What is it about that blue agave that makes normal functioning adults turn into temporary psychopaths?   We’ve all heard and/or told our…

I Love You, Granny

My maternal grandmother was a special kind of grandmother. She was the one who always had butterscotch hard candies or peppermint disks in her purse for when she became a little antsy during those long church services. She always kept a candy dish full of those candies as well as another for chocolate-covered peanuts on her sofa table. I loved those visits to her house in the country after church services in that small town or on holidays or other special occasions. She made the best Sunday dinners; the best beef roasts with the perfect, thick brown gravy and the…

After reading justachik1’s post on stinky hoohas, this is the first story that came to my mind. You are right justachik1…..the struggle is real. This story takes place several years ago. I was backpacking through Eastern Africa for three months with a handsome British, David Beckham with deadlocks lookalike whom I met on a topless beach in Greece several months prior. We decided to rent a house on an island for a few weeks with two other friends we met there and “David Beckham” and I got the biggest room to accommodate our lovely shag sessions. Jealous? I thought I…

A Barbie?

I am so over the lies of Christmas! It starts out innocently enough… the elf on the shelf, Santa, the flying reindeer, the Polar Express, the North Pole Experience. All of these Christmas time experiences were brought into our family with good intentions. But now I have a savvy six year old who knows it is all fake, and an 11 years old and a 9 year old who truly with all their hearts still believe. So I am the one that feels trapped in the Christmas non-truths. I seriously hate the physical feeling I get when my youngest is…

I love Christmas. I always have. I love Christmas so much I used to celebrate it two times a year. And why not? There’s so much to love. People are kinder. Family becomes more important. The daily whirl slows for a brief moment and there’s a touch of magic in the air. The world, as a whole, takes on a glow. In fact, the same street lights and shop signs I see illuminated all year appear to shine brighter, twinkle a bit more during the holiday season. For me, it really is the most wonderful time of the year. This…

The Dot

For years I have enjoyed receiving Ruth Stricker’s Marsh Monthly newsletter in the mail each month. The October issue particularly resonated with me. Ruth’s column opened with this story: One day a professor handed out an exam to his students with the text facing down, as usual. He asked the students to turn over the papers. To everyone’s surprise, there were no questions – just a black dot in the center of the sheet of paper. The professor told them the following: “I want you to write about what you see there.” At the end of the class, the professor…

It’s Christmas Day! Hopefully this finds all of you surrounded by those that you love…or at least snuggled up with a good holiday movie. I must confess, my family watches a lot of movies.  We watch movies at home, we enjoy going to the theater… especially at dinner time, because then I don’t have to cook!  With all this movie watching, we quote movies ALL the time.  Yes. We are THAT family. My favorite time is the at the start of the holiday season, when we break out our holiday movie collection….and you guessed it, we start throwing around some…

I have seen a few dog posts this month and find it funny that it’s the same topic I have been thinking of writing about. I have been trying to figure out how to write the post and not make me sound like the crazy dog lady. But I finally decided fuck it, and here it goes…. Those who know me, know that my dogs are my world and I am very involved in dog rescue as the assistant director of Stealing Hearts Rescue (stealingheartsrescue.com) here in Arizona. I have been volunteering for 9 years now under my good friend…

Making Memories

Posted in Chick21

Once again, the holidays seem to have crept up on me this year. Just like last year, and the year before that. I’m just not that super organized person who has their Christmas list done by Halloween and all the shopping and decorating done by Thanksgiving. I have one of those friends who has everything done by Thanksgiving, the tree goes up the weekend after Thanksgiving, and she’s just done. She makes it looks so easy. I love her, but I just don’t get it. Honestly, I think it’s a little strange. I am definitely no Martha Stewart, but I…

Green Day

Posted in ChickTwenty

I woke up early in the morning like I do every day. Hit snooze twice, rolled out of bed, tossed on a robe and went downstairs to grab a cup of coffee. I came back upstairs and decided to take a bath to warm myself up for the day. I begin to shave my legs and gray-ish droplets seemed to be gathering at the end of my razor. I examine the razor and don’t see anything strange, so I keep on shaving. Still more droplets. I glance down at my bath water which seems murky. Startled, I look at my…
