being a chick

Posted in frickachik17

Women have the raw end of the stick.  Periods. Childbirth.  The pressure from EVERYONE telling us what we have to look like and who we should aspire to be like.  Don’t even make me mention shaving (rolls eyes). Hey, congrats you’re not pregnant again this month!  Now blood is going to flow from you like Niagara fucking Falls.  And if the constant bloody river coming out of your lady bits isn’t bad enough, TAMPONS AND PADS ARE SO EXPENSIVE.  I didn’t ask for this?!?!?! I mean, yay, I’m not bearing a child (which is cause for celebration) but buying feminine…

Naked and (trying hard to not be) Afraid

Posted in luckychik13

It seems to me that a lot of my posts have their beginnings in a piece of literature I share with my creative writing students. This post is no exception. Below is my response to the beautifully lyrical Waiting for My Clothes. I wrote this before my recent post (;grace) and yet it is an appropriate follow-up (with additional text) to that piece. Naked is so much more than only wearing your birthday suit, more than being starkers, more than nudity. While naked can be a physical state – a lack of clothing or other type of socially accepted camouflage…

Ding, Dong

Did you ever try to think of something clever to say that makes you sound worldly and interesting and everything you come up with seems boring and lame?  I’ve been trying on and off for the past two weeks to come up with a subject for this month’s blog, but I can’t think of a damn thing to write about. So much is going on with work and kids and responsibilities, but nothing seems worthy of writing here.  Rather than spew a bunch of nonsense, I thought I would offer my favorite joke, instead. It is a little risqué, so…

Changing Perspectives

Posted in Chika12

I’ve been out of the country for the past four weeks, traveling in Southeast Asia, and have been having a blast becoming acquainted with new cultures and places. There is something so exhilarating about being somewhere that I’ve never been before and having to use my cultural wits to navigate through situations that are completely foreign to me. Although I am familiar with other countries in SEAsia, I had never been to Vietnam or Cambodia until this past month. Remarkably, throughout this whole trip, we haven’t had a single negative encounter with any of the local people that we’ve met.…

Transition

Posted in C7

What the heck happened to me? And when did it happen? Mentally I think I’m 25, but physically, there’s no hiding that I’m in my mid-40s. For me, it’s strange to make the transition because I don’t feel old, I’m just getting older. I like that aging comes with more self- confidence; more freedom from worry of what others think about me, but sometimes, the physical part of aging isn’t so desirable. “Hold on a second, let me get my glasses so I can see that spread sheet.” What? This actually comes out of my mouth?!! Now I have 3 pairs…

The Best Intentions

I had a whole different post that I was going to post, but I picked my daughter up today and things changed. My daughter just started 8th grade basketball. I am so happy to be a part of it even though I think the coach is actually a seventh grader. My daughter walks out with her friend every day. The friend has to wait 15-20 minutes for her parents to get there. Last week, my daughter divulged that her aunt passed away and they have her cousin living with her. When the aunt passed the custody paperwork wasn’t complete, which…

Clean Freak!

Posted in Chic#5

This is my life… I will be the first to admit that I have a problem.  It’s what makes me weird…my OCD, obsession, the thing I have to do before I go to bed every night, the thing I have to do before I leave for work every morning…Hello, my name is Chic#5, and I am a Clean Freak! This is something I never wanted to be, especially because I grew up with a mother who was also a clean freak. Is this a genetic defect?  In fact, my mom and her cleaning used to drive me insane.  I remember…

LovethisLife

LovethisLife… is about celebrating the moment and that we’re not guaranteed or owed another day and how cool it is that what we hide can actually be the fuel towards our glory and that it’s not so bad being proven wrong LovethisLife…. is about welcoming the blind turn and the possibility that there’s no such thing as coincidence and that empathy is incredibly sexy and that it’s never too late to pick up a guitar or a paintbrush or to make an amend or to make a new friend LovethisLife… could be about rekindling a past flame or igniting a…

The Letting Go

Posted in La Segunda Chica

Melissa, let it go. My internal voice seems to be telling me that a lot lately.  Crap, I forgot to refill my kid’s zit cream prescription.  Melissa, let it go, one night without it isn’t going to make her a social pariah.  I haven’t written my blog yet. Melissa, let it go, you still have a few days to play with this idea.  Damn, I forgot to pull the chicken out of the freezer before I left for work.  Melissa, let it go, we can call out for pizza tonight. In these day to day, non-life threatening cases, the voice…
