Christmas Is Canceled

Posted in chik11

Let’s just say that I’m happy the holidays are over. I’m sure many of you have stories to share…and so do I. Why do we put pressure on ourselves to create the perfect holiday season? I have three children – ages 17, 15 & 12 – and for some reason, they weren’t excited about the holidays this year and neither was I. I’m sure it was a combination of things. The kids are getting older, they have bigger “wants”, we weren’t having family in town this year, etc. The day came when it was time to drive out to Babbitt…

Christmas Reversals (3chickstothewind’s Husband).

Our largest concern on Christmas Eve used to be whether we could get all of the gifts assembled between the time the children went to sleep, climbed out of bed, over and over again, and finally went to sleep. There had to be milk, and a bite out of the cookies, and batteries, and we would have to check that the video camera was plugged in and charged. We would open the doors slowly, and pad around the house in our stockings, looking out for the squeaky floorboards. Now our biggest concern is getting the kids assembled on Christmas Eve.…

I love Christmas. I always have. I love Christmas so much I used to celebrate it two times a year. And why not? There’s so much to love. People are kinder. Family becomes more important. The daily whirl slows for a brief moment and there’s a touch of magic in the air. The world, as a whole, takes on a glow. In fact, the same street lights and shop signs I see illuminated all year appear to shine brighter, twinkle a bit more during the holiday season. For me, it really is the most wonderful time of the year. This…

Making Memories

Once again, the holidays seem to have crept up on me this year. Just like last year, and the year before that. I’m just not that super organized person who has their Christmas list done by Halloween and all the shopping and decorating done by Thanksgiving. I have one of those friends who has everything done by Thanksgiving, the tree goes up the weekend after Thanksgiving, and she’s just done. She makes it looks so easy. I love her, but I just don’t get it. Honestly, I think it’s a little strange. I am definitely no Martha Stewart, but I…

Gift Wrap or Saran Wrap?

The art of giving is a beautiful thing.  With the holiday season upon us, what is the best gift to give to the one you love? It was 21 years ago that I married the love of my life.  We began our adventure of life together by moving to Kentucky, so that he could start his neurosurgery residency.  Back then, residents worked about 120+ hours a week during their six year residency program.  I worked as well, long hours, but not quite as long as him.  As newlyweds, we didn’t have a care in the world.  No kids and no…

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays I went back home a month ago and during a nightly “check-in” call to my husband and kids, he mentioned asking my mom to come stay with us over Christmas. I immediately brushed it off and forgot because I assumed that she would decline the offer. A year ago my brother had offered to pay her way to fly out with him and his wife and daughter but my mom turned him down. She said something about “air travel being too crazy” or “not feeling up to it”. Some excuse, any excuse would do. Anyway, upon my return…

The holidays are upon us and the craziness of it can be overwhelming and stressful.  I’d like to remind myself and others of what is important.  The simple beauty of the holiday season while being grateful for all we have and remembering to enjoy our time with family and friends. “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.  It turns what we have into enough and more.  Gratitude turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order and confusion to clarity.  It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.  It turns problems into gifts,…
